2022 International and Area Studies Students of the Year

Each year, IAS nominates outstanding seniors for the Student of the Year Award. This award recognizes graduating seniors in each IAS program with remarkable academic accomplishments and exceptional community involvement. Congratulations to this year's awardees! Anna Foulks

Major: International Studies, Philosophy, Spanish

Minor: Music

Involvement: Anna is a member of the Honors College, President of the Spanish Club and the University of Utah Swimming Club. She studied abroad in Spain.

Ana-Luiza Ramos

Major: International Studies, Political Science—International Politics focus

Minor: Portuguese & Brazilian Studies

Involvement: Ana-Luiza will be interning with U.K. Parliament this Summer through Hinckley. She studies foreign relations with a focus on Latin America, and she erved as Editor in Chief of The Daily Utah Chronicle.

Major: International Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies

Minor: Middles East Studies--Arabic

Involvement:  A member of the Honors College, Flawless is active in the Bennion Center, research, and in Model Arab League. She has been previously involved with the Middle East Club and Emerging Student Leaders program. 

Bailey Warren

Major: International Studies, Economics—Statistical Analysis Emphasis

Minor: Spanish

Involvement: A member of the Honors College, Bailey is interested in the interdisciplinary study of Latin America and the Middle East. She worked on the CEI project,  lived in Portugal and speaks Portuguese.

Lehua Kono

Major: International Studies, Asian Studies

Minor: Sociology

Involvement: Lehua is a Pasifika Ambassador, President of Asian American Student Association, former VP of the Japanese American Student Association, and involved in the Philippine-American United Student Organization. She studies global health and addressing disparities in the Pacific Islander population, and received the P. Olson Scholarship.

Paola Linette Cervantes 

Major: Latin American Studies, InternationalStudies, Political Science—International Politics focus

Minor: Anthropology, Portuguese & Brazilian Studies

Involvement: Paola, also the Outstanding Senior of the College of Humanities,  volunteers with Comunidades Unidas and serves as Peer Mentor. She interned at Dream Center, served as a Hinckley Ambassador, received a Malala Assembly Award and has been involved in Diversity Scholars and in Latinos in Action.

Chase Killpack

 Major: Middle East Studies-- Persian

Minor: Chemistry

Involvement:  Chase has studied Persian, Dari, and Pashto, and assisted Afghan refugees. He volunteers with Baskerville Institute to help foster U.S.-Iranian relations, which includes studying COVID-19 responses and rural health care. Chase received a FLAS fellowship and volunteers at medical clinics as a translator.

Sandra Del Rio Madrigal

Sandra is the recipient of the prestigeous Steffensen Cannon Scholarship, which enables students to pursue excellence in their chosen fields of Education and Humanities without the burden of employment.

Major: Latin American Studies, English, Ethnic Studies

Involvement: Sandra is a UROP scholar, a volunteer with Comunidades Unidas, and a member of the Poetry and Prose Writing Club. Studying creative and academic writing with a focus on Latin American/Chicanx culture, she wants to decolonize spaces through writing and publishing. Sandra studies Nahuatl and the relationship/complexity of indigenous culture and Latinx culture.
