International & Area Studies Academic Year Scholarships
The International and Area Studies academic year scholarships provides $5000 for the academic year (fall and spring) for selected University of Utah undergraduate students majoring in Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, and International Studies. Applicants must carry a GPA of 3.5 or higher, must be a resident of the State of Utah by the term they will be receiving the waiver, and submit the appropriate application form below. Applicants should expect an answer by the end of April.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
FLAS Fellowships are federally funded awards offered through the University of Utah's Asia Center. They provide funding for undergraduate and graduate students who study modern foreign languages and related area studies. Undergraduate awards provide up to $10,000 in tuition and a $5,000 stipend for the academic year. Graduate awards provide up to $18,000 in tuition and a $15,000 stipend for the academic year. Summer awards provide up to $5,000 in tuition and a $3,500 stipend.

International Studies - Dee Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship
Through a generous gift from the Lawrence T. and Janet T. Dee Foundation, the International Studies Program and the Department of World Languages and Cultures are able offer a limited number of scholarships for declared majors to support participation in approved study abroad programs (Hinckley global internships are not currently eligible for support). These funds can be used to cover study abroad fees and tuition.
Approval of Learning Abroad programs is not required at the time of application. If selected, confirmation of admittance to an approved program will be required to receive the award.
Deadline: First Friday of February (for travel during the Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 semesters).
Bradley Parker Memorial Scholarship
The Bradley Parker Memorial Scholarship will offer 1 to 2 scholarships per year of $1,000 to students (undergraduate and graduate students are eligible) who plan to travel abroad for field research related to their studies during summer 2025 or the 2025-2026 academic year.

Rosaline Pao Memorial Scholarship
The Rosaline Pao Memorial Scholarship will offer scholarships ranging from $1,000 – $3,000 to both undergraduate and graduate students who plan to travel to China for their studies (including China-focused study, language training, and/or research) during summer 2024 or the 2024-2025 academic year. Learning Abroad programs as well as other academic-related travel will be considered.
*All awards will be contingent on travel authorizations being granted.

Totoki Memorial Scholarship
The Totoki Memorial Scholarship will offer scholarships ranging from $1,000 – $4,000 to both undergraduate and graduate students who plan to travel to Japan for their studies during summer 2024 or the 2024-2025 academic year. Learning Abroad programs as well as other academic-related travel will be considered.

Middle East Studies Study Abroad Scholarship
The Middle East Center will award up to three scholarships of $1500 each for students participating in a study abroad program or Hinckley global internship in the Middle East. The scholarship is available only for declared majors and minors in Middle East Studies.

Marion Farouk - Sluglett Award Paper Competition
The Marion Farouk-Sluglett Memorial Award was established in 1997 in honor of Dr.
Marion Farouk-Sluglett, an internationally-recognized scholar of the modern Middle
East and Iraqi politics who taught at the University of Utah from September 1994 until
her untimely death in February 1996.
Each year, the Middle East Center recognizes one undergraduate and one graduate research
paper with a focus on the Middle East.
